Question
How does the Wi-Fi Auto Channel behave on the SBG Gateways?
Answer
The Wi-Fi Channel setting in the SBG Gateways can be changed to improve wireless connectivity from interference caused by other nearby wireless access point sharing the same wireless channel.

The following describes the behavior of Wi-Fi Channel setting when set to Auto.  The Auto option is only available for wireless network broadcasting on 2.4 GHz radio frequency.  It is not available on 5 GHz radio frequency.

When the gateway is operating and Wi-Fi is enabled, Auto channel will act as follows:

  • As the gateway boots it will scan channels 1, 6, an 11 and selects the channel with the least interference.
  • If no clients are connected, the gateway re-scans channels 1, 6, an 11 every 15 minutes and selects the channel with the least interference.

NOTE 1: The SBG gateway will not change channels if any Wi-Fi client's are actively connected to the SurfBoard Gateway.

NOTE 2: In the Wi-Fi spectrum, there are multiple channels that overlap and degrade performance.  Because channels 1, 6, and 11 do not overlap, they are used for better performance and stability.
