Question
How do I configure my SBR-AC1900P to host a guest wireless connection?
Answer
The SBR-AC1900P includes several options for securing the wireless LAN (WLAN).  WPA (WiFi Protected Access) -PSK (Pre Shared Key) provides the best data protection and access control.

The SBR-AC1900P supports 2.4GHz and 5.0 GHz Wi-Fi frequencies simultaneously.  Each frequency has it's own SSID (Service Set Identification), which is the name given to the wireless network of the SBR-AC1900P.  The 2.4 GHz frequency supports 802.11 b/g/n wireless clients, while the 5.0 GHz frequency supports 802.11n wireless clients only.  802.11n devices will generally perform better in the 5GHz range.

The SBR-AC1900P also allows for a wireless guest network (in addition to a wireless primary network).  The guest network provides access to the Internet, and also includes an option to prevent devices from communicating with primary wireless and wired connected client devices.

The Guest Network is disabled by default. This document describes how to configure the Guest Network to use WPA-PSK wireless encryption for the 2.4 GHz and/or 5 GHz wireless network.

NOTE 1: Older wireless client cards may not support WPA or WPA2 encryption methods.  The wireless adapter will need to be replaced with WPA or WPA2 encryption support.

NOTE 2: Due to security and performance purposes,  the WEP wireless encryption is no longer available on firmware v1.0.7-B05 and later. 

 

Setup Guest Wi-Fi Network
 
  1. Launch a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari. Enter http://192.168.0.1 into the address box, and press the Enter key.  The Login page will appear.

    NOTE: By default the LAN IP address is 192.168.0.1. If the default address has been changed, enter the custom address in the address box.

  2. On the Login page, enter admin in the Username field.
  3. Enter password in the Password field.
  4. Click the Login button. The Home page will appear.

  5. On the Home page, click on Manage Guest Network.  The Wireless - Guest Networks page will appear.

  6. On the Wireless - Guest Networks, select the desired frequency tab to modify (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz).

    NOTE 1: Choosing the Wireless Interface only determines which frequency settings are desired to be modified.  The 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies are already enabled simultaneously by default.

    NOTE 2: The 2.4 GHz frequency supports 802.11 b/g/n wireless clients, while the 5.0 GHz frequency supports 802.11n wireless clients only.  802.11n devices will generally perform better in the 5GHz range.

    NOTE 3: In this example, the 2.4 GHz frequency has been selected to modify.

     
  7. Click the Guest Network drop-down menu and select Enabled.
  8. Enter a new wireless network name in the Guest Network Name (SSID) field.
  9. Click the IP Network drop-down menu and select Guest or LAN.

    NOTE: When LAN is selected, devices on the Guest Network can access devices on the Primary Network.  When Guest is selected, devices on the Guest Network can not access devices on the Primary Network.

     
  10. Click the Wireless Security drop-down menu and select WPA2-PSK + WPA-PSK.

    NOTE: Enable WPA-PSK for backward compatibility, WPA2-PSK for maximum security, or both for maximum interoperability.  In the example below, both WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK are enabled.

     
  11. Click the Encryption drop-down menu, and select TKIP+AES.  

    NOTE: Select AES for maximum security, or TKIP+AES for maximum interoperability.  In the example below, TKIP+AES is enabled. 

     
  12. Enter a new wireless password in the Passphrase field.  The WPA key must be 8 - 63 characters. 

    NOTE:  Check the Show Passphrase box if it is desired to view the key.

     
  13. Click the Apply button.

    Right click on the image to save it to your computer.
      

The SBR-AC1900P is now configured to allow wireless client connections using WPA-PSK encryption. 

To make a connection, the wireless client must have WPA-PSK or WPA-PSK2 encryption enabled and have the same WPA encryption key as the ARRIS Wireless Router.  For assistance with the wireless client,
