Question
What should I know about enabling / disabling NAPT mode in the SBG6580?
Answer
By default, the SBG6580 operates as a gateway, and provides Internet access for multiple devices (up to 245 devices), connecting to the SBG6580 gateway.  When operating as a gateway, the SBG6580 serves as a modem and a router and keeps the devices in the Local Area Network (LAN) hidden.  In certain situations, it may be desired to disable the router function of the SBG6580, and have it operate as a modem only.  This can be accomplished by configuring the SBG6580 for Bridge Mode.  When Bridge Mode is enabled, the router function is turned off and the device directly connected to the SBG6580 will receive the Public IP address from the Cable Provider.  This document describes how to enable and disable Bridge Mode.

NOTE: Although the SBG6580 does not route traffic when Bridge Mode is enabled, it can still act as a firewall if the firewall settings in the SBG6580 are enabled.

This is an ideal setup when:
  • Adding a firewall, router or another NAT device to manage the Local Area Network
  • Hosting services or applications that can benefit from being directly accessible from the Internet

To Enable Bridge Mode

  1. Launch a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari. Enter http://192.168.0.1 into the address box, and press the Enter key.  The Login page appears.

NOTE: By default the LAN IP address is 192.168.0.1. If the default address has been changed, enter the custom address in the address box.

  2. On the Login page:
    a.   Enter admin in the Username field.
    b.   Enter motorola in the Password field.
    c.   Click the Login button. The Home page will appear.

NOTE: On firmware version 8.9.0.4 and later, the default admin password is required to be changed.  The Change User Password prompt will immediately appear after logging into the Web manager with the default admin password.  For assistance with the Change User Password screen, please refer to article # 18055 - SBG6580 (v.8.9.x): Prompt to Change Default Admin Login.

The SBG6580 has now been configured with Gateway mode disabled. Make sure that the devices that are to receive a public IP address are directly connected to the SBG6580's Ethernet ports. These devices will also need to be configured to obtain an IP address automatically.

To configure a Windows or Macintosh device to obtain an IP address automatically, please refer to the Answer link below. For all other devices, please contact the manufacturer.
